Impeccable accuracy, a heavy grain weight and a certain utilitarianism from your shotgun, with premium quality and premium benefits. The Hornady 12 gauge 2 ¾” 300 grain Saboted SST Slug with a polymer point is a nearly perfect shotgun hunting round for close and medium range big game hunting.

The SST (Super Shock Tip) by Hornady is a specialty hunting projectile that offers very high end penetration, excellent mushrooming and very flat trajectories. In fact: Hornady claims it is the flattest trajectory on the market and that it will produce sub 2” groups at 100 yards. Note: these claims specify it must be shot out of a rifled barrel.

Furthermore: This slug MUST BE USED in a Rifled barrel. Period.

Taking nothing away from the performance, as this Hornady slug is an excellent choice, but it does come with some cost increase relative to other slug options and it does need to be used in a rifled barrel. In the end: it’s important to balance value with reliability. If you are able to achieve single shot long range kills, and they cost a bit more, there is extreme value there. If a shot is missed because you can’t use a different brand of slug at 140 yards, then the Hornady is worth its weight in gold that day.
